All day kindergarten...equal blame for this extra and unsupportable expense can be shared by ETFO. They fully supported it because it meant more teaching jobs. Problem is, the "system" couldn't/can't afford it and your Federation should have known that it was going to be paid for on the backs of its own members.

E, it is true that they are in the Constitution. However, there is a precedent for amending the Constitution regarding separate school boards (e.g. Quebec 1997 and Newfoundland 1997). This past spring, when some staff and trustees were resisting the idea of having gay-straight alliances in schools, there was a lot of discussion about whether having publicly-funded Catholic boards now is actually constitutional or should be amended. I did not make up this debate.

"What you have to keep in mind is that many Ontarians are currently wondering why we have a publicly-funded school board for Catholics when A) we don’t have that for any other religious group and B) certain teachings of the Catholic church are actually at odds with Canadian law. There are those in the Catholic union (and, similarly, francophone school boards) who believe it would be a bad idea to make waves when it comes to contract negotiations."

Um, publicly funded Catholic school boards are in the Constitution. They have nothing to worry about in terms of "making waves". Do your research.

Dear Patricia,

Thank you for your comment, even though it was not directed at me. I am not sure what your argument is, since it doesn't address the article, but I'd be interested to hear your reasoning. If you are actually wishing to address work-to-rule and Bill 115, please note that this post was written before the start of school, and has very little to do with those issues. There is a more recent post dealing with those here.

When I was in homeschooling (Grades 2-8), my mother taught me that it's important to think critically, know your facts, do proper research, and use compassion and empathy for your fellow human beings in everyday life. The thing that worries me about your comment, like those of so many, is that you speak of teachers as if they are clones. They are actually as different as humans are in any situation. I hate to think of you, as a teacher, passing your bigotry along to your children.

Dear Disagree,
I totally agree with you, that's why I homeschool my children! Doctors didn't get a raise and they didn't stop treating their patients. If teachers think they can hold taxpayers, parents and students hostage, then they can think again. What little respect I once had for teachers is now gone. I hope the government locks the teachers out. I would like more parents and children to find out how easy and awesome homeschooling is! The "TED talks" speak of child development in a refreshing way. Power to the children, not the teachers! Where can I sign up to picket AGAINST the teachers?

You make some really good points. It must be really tough to work in the sector that sees some of the worst marginalization - especially because you naturally care so much about the people you work with. I don't know your specific field, but I have heard some awful stories about the realities of being an adult with a disability in this province... it's scary. Kudos to you for your generous attitude, and for the difficult, valuable work you do.

Thank you for clarifying the working hours point - now I get what you're saying. And frankly, the "volunteer" hours thing doesn't really make sense to me, because I've never been able to get all the planning and marking I need to do done within the prep time of the school day - at least not while working a full-time schedule.

If I'm honest, I agree that there are some over-dramatic sound bites happening on both sides of this argument (union and government reps)... and that I don't always agree with every statement made on "my" behalf by the union. But out of the two factions, I know which one values my role. And absolutely, I don't like seeing kids suffer for things they don't control either - I don't know any teachers who do - but you can't just decide to opt out of job action, even if you'd like to.

Thank you for disagreeing respectfully - you also sound like a very interesting, hardworking person who is dedicated and caring. Your profession is lucky to have you.
