BANG Movie Reviews: Just Go With It vs. Blue Valentine

February 22, 2011

Kudos to my friend Skye. She is my most moviegoing friend, and she has now seen all TEN Oscar Best Picture Nominees! And she still made time to see two other movies with me in the past couple weeks.

Here’s my little Table O’ Comparison between Just Go With It and Blue Valentine. Two movies designed for completely different audiences… but I think it’s fair to say we enjoyed both.

Just a few reasons I love my hubby

February 17, 2011

I know I missed Valentine’s Day blogging this year, but I figure any day is a good day to write a tribute to someone you love.

This one is about my Hubbibi. He is:

  • snuggly
  • warm and generous (to the extent that he always lets me warm my cold feet on him in bed – even if he’s already been asleep)
  • funny, with a bizarre and geeky sense of humour (very compatible with mine)
  • smart and knowledgeable (to the extent that if I ever don’t know the answer to something, I am just as likely to ask him as the InterWeb – and he’s almost as likely to know)
  • a wonderful daddy (good at story-reading, monster-imitating, tickling, cuddling, face-making, etc.)
  • passionate and inspirable about countless different things
  • and dependable. Last night, I was so grateful to have him as a parenting partner. E was having a rough evening and was not himself. Around bedtime, he got all upset and kept crying and we didn’t know why – when he eventually fell asleep, it didn’t last long, and then there was more crying. By that time, Daddy had left for trivia night (I told him to go ahead, we were fine), and I was trying all the different things I could think of to help my poor little boy, but I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I texted my hubby – mostly because it’s scary to worry alone, to listen alone to your child crying – and he came home right away, no questions asked. Even though he didn’t know what was wrong either, just having him there made me feel so much better, calmer. And soon after that, E took a turn for the better and fell asleep… almost magically. Like I said… so grateful.

There are lots more things I could add, but those are for another day. (Or unbloggable. ;D)

BONUS E-photo, just for kicks:

Thankfully, E was much more himself today. He amused himself by climbing on the couch, lounging around, and arranging pillows in a decadent formation around him, having deliberately chosen this book:

The Elements of Style. Works on so many levels.

FURTHER BONUS E-quote (in response to me singing Raffi lyrics “Went to the doctor and the doctor said, ‘Ooh-ah, I got a pain in my side!’”): “Ooh-ah! Penis, penis.” (I guess some of the right sounds are there.)

I can just imagine the wonderful situations in which this will crop up.

The Cool Kid

February 15, 2011

Here’s my photo worth a thousand words today. I guess some good CAN come of my toddler deciding to peruse my junk drawer.

P.S. Doesn’t he look like the kind of ruffian kid who would play the dice? He was entertained for a good half-hour this morning playing with our Yahtzee dice-in-a-cup.

Toddler Tracks: Vocabularrific

February 12, 2011

This kid says so many things that make us laugh, on a daily basis, that we can’t possibly keep track of them all. Some are only funny because we’re his parents and we dig everything he does. (Like, for example, a few minutes ago he called out from his bed, where he’s been procrastinating about going to sleep, “My button fell off.” He is wearing zero buttons. He’s trying to get us to come in there, the little sneakster, but we cracked up anyway.)

Lately, his words are getting ridiculous. This is mostly because I have lots of family members who like to experiment on my son, teaching him advanced polysyllabic words just to hear him say them. And sometimes he just likes unusual words and latches onto them… which is something I can relate to.

  • Daddy taught him to tap his chest and say “Pectorals.” One morning, it was the first word out of his mouth upon awakening.
  • Not exactly vocabulary, but since it made me laugh: another morning, the first words out of his mouth were “Oz, Willow, Giles, Xander.” (Please don’t judge: he’s only seen a total of about 5 minutes of one episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but he really likes to look at the pictures on the DVD case.)
  • He has a set of books from two of his great-aunts featuring West Coast Native art. He likes them a lot, and we get a kick out of hearing him say with enthusiasm words like “salmon”, “ravens”, “totem”, “peace”, and “unity”.
  • He also has a book called “How Things Go”, which is way above his comprehension level but has lots of flaps and moving bits so he loves it. He has learned words like “cockpit”, “container ship”, “stabilizers”, and “jet engines”. And he knows who’s in the black-and-white portrait on the page about forces: “Newton.” In fact, just this morning, he spontaneously christened his stuffed moose Newton. (His second toy with a real name!)
  • He is an expert on trapezoids. (He’s got a shape puzzle at his grandparents’ house, and he’d already figured out square, circle, rectangle, triangle, and – sometimes – octagon… so trapezoid has to follow, right?) He identifies them everywhere, in things I’ve never noticed contain trapezoids, like lampshades and our square bowls and baskets. It knocks me out every time.
  • He’s learned, again from his Daddy, to say an ironic “Wah wah wahhh” punchline at the end of certain books (namely, the “If You Give A Mouse” books). It’s pretty funny – especially when he forgets to wait until the end of the book.
  • On the topic of those moments that make me almost fall over with pride… he’s got a great ear. The other day we were at the bank and heard a distant siren. He immediately looked at me (with his current favourite dramatic face on, the one with big eyes, tiny “o” mouth, chin down) and said “Ambulance.”
  • [That was a funny trip out - I tried to make the bank sound like a fun errand so he would want to go, and he took my encouragement too much to heart. All the way there, he was saying "Bank, woo-hoo!" and then he recognized where we were, based on the parking lot (?!), and was all excited to hear the beeping of the ATM. The bank wasn't even open. Then I taught him to push the door-opener button, and he loved that. He was quite sad to leave. He kept turning around and going back inside until I finally had to scoop him up.]
  • Also, on the mornings he goes to the babysitter’s, sometimes we listen to a classical music station in the car. Sometimes I’ll tell him, “Ooh, that’s the sound of a trumpet,” or “There’s the flute,” or “Those are violins.” Then one morning Bob Mackowycz of CBC2 played “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve, with its infamous violin riff intro, and my brilliant little son said, “Violins!”
  • On a more random note: he’s become obsessed with drawing. He wants his crayons all the time. Sometimes he wants us to draw things. Right now, he usually wants us to draw either an E, or a 2, or a cow. Which is too bad because my cow drawings are awful.
  • I have been enjoying his transference of concepts. I got a great kick out of the blasphemous moment when he was fiddling with his Batman action figure’s cape, and said, “Apron.” But the absolute best was when he found my bamboo cracker tray, put it on the floor, stood on it, and said, “Surfin’.” I admit to being slightly embarrassed because he’s obviously already seen Surf’s Up too many times in the short period he’s been fixated on animated movies… but it was SO apt. Just like Cody Maverick’s!

My List of Excuses

February 10, 2011

Okay. So here’s why I have been so shamefully neglecting Blogland.

  1. Report cards, a.k.a. “Where the @#*! did all this unmarked work come from?!”, a.k.a. “Why the @#*! didn’t I do this marking earlier?!”, a.k.a. “How is it possible that I have half as many students as usual and somehow it seems like more work?”, a.k.a. “In heaven’s name, does anyone really care whether Jimmy’s reading comprehension was satisfactory or considerable??”
  2. The Hunger Games series, by Suzanne Collins, a.k.a. “Reeeeead meeeee… NOW! Cast away your report cards, let your child go play with random kitchen utensils, it’ll be okay if you just READ ME.” (Yes, I liked it. Compulsively loved it would actually be a better term. The story, the characters… and especially the horribly imaginative yet profound underlying messages.)

  1. My husband, a.k.a. the devil: “No, it’s okay, honey. Just leave the dishes. You go ahead and read your book. Your report cards will be fine. Have a rest and read.” I love him so, my sweet and generous bibliophile.
  2. The germs, a.k.a. the time-vanishers. We had a snow day, a very rare occurrence where the entire school board actually shuts down, perfect opportunity to kick some report cards outta the park, and I had the flu or something that day and had to waste the whole thing. Slept for like five hours while E was at the babysitter’s, and was too zonked… even to read.
  3. The star, a.k.a. my progeny: constant entertainment + constant requests for stories, crayons, food, trucks, movies, piano, outside, baths, more food, and more stories.
  4. The lethargy, a.k.a. dragging myself around as if hung over.
  5. The exhaustion, a.k.a. pathological napping, even without the flu.
  6. The queasiness, a.k.a. “I’m hungry, but I can’t imagine eating anything containing sugar or salt or any of the foods from the food groups.”
  7. The stupidness, a.k.a. brayn onli worx at haff-speed, haff the thyme. Stuff allwez falz out uv it.
  8. The freeloader, a.k.a. the tiny human in my belly. Yes, we’re with child #2!

All of the above points can be blamed on Number 10. Well… okay, maybe not report cards… and I guess not the irresistible power of The Hunger Games. But my Number 3 has been lovely about the naps and the resting, partly because I’m busy making us a Number 10. Number 4 is  just accentuated by Numbers 6-9, as is my ability to keep up with Number 5.

We had a dating sonogram on Tuesday. Being told by the ultrasound tech (just as with E), “Wow, this baby’s very active… Swimming!” was a jolt of joy. Especially because there’s always part of me that irrationally doubts that there’s actually a baby in there at all. When you can’t feel the movement, it’s just hard to believe a person is not only forming in there, but jumping around and expressing itself.

Thankfully, now that I’m 13 weeks along, the worst is over. I have some appetite and some energy back, and it’s a lot easier to be excited about a brother or sister for E, and another chance to snuggle a newborn. icon smile My List of Excuses icon smile My List of Excuses icon smile My List of Excuses In fact, it’s easier in general to be excited, because now I can picture having a baby, for real. The first time, you can try to imagine, but you can’t actually understand how precious that being is going to be, how thrilling its very presence.

And I can’t wait to see E interacting with a brother or sister. I don’t think I have illusions about this – I know there will be bickering and hitting and screeching, but I feel confident there will also be hugs and kisses, and eventually, bizarre conversations only kids can understand, and games of imaginative awesomeness.

Alors, voilà. I’m hoping to enjoy more frequent blog-moments from now on. (This sounds familiar…) Really this time.
